Congealed, 2021
The pandemic was often a time of isolation and loneliness, and for many artists who thrive on their community for inspiration, this was especially tough. For this group of artists, adapting to this reality became a sometimes tricky balance of protecting themselves and others while still finding a way to gather in small numbers and low-risk settings. In this exhibition, we reflected on the art created in or inspired by the depths of the pandemic, as well as the pandemic's influence on the final work and process.
One of the effects of the pandemic on ANGRY CLOUD > DESCND was a consolidation of the ongoing theme of working through angst, fear, and anger for momentary transcendence into feelings of calm in a continuous and ever-evolving cycle. He began to explore more distinctly the different aspects of politics and the zeitgeist, but also began to look more inward, exploring the ties that bind people together in the wonderful, but also difficult, nature of relationships. This inspired some of the pieces of the pandemic era, especially “Congealed,” where the different planes became distinct aspects of the cycle of ANGRY CLOUD > DESCND.
